I agree there need to be big cuts, but it seems like the only thing we cut nowadays are smaller programs that have actual long-term benefits. Not things that actually contribute to our huge debt. Like it's been said multiple times in this thread, the military budget NEEDS to be DRAMATICALLY cut and if you disagree, then you're either completely ignorant of how much we exactly spend on our military, or you are absolutely paranoid of the rest of the world.
Taking away bargaining rights from teachers that are already underpaid? What's that going to do? Lowering the salary of congressmen? Congratulations, Congressman Boehner, Congress now saved an extremely tiny bit of money (which you then blow by increasing spending on the military by $24,000,000,000 that it doesn't need).
We need to cut spending on things with no return, and increase spending on things that will truly benefit America in the future: Education, science, innovation, etc. If that means higher taxes, then so be it. That's what got America to be the biggest and best economy in the world to begin with.

Sorry, but for me this story doesn't pass the sniff test.
Since it's a page 2 story, I think the editors think the same.
Great PR story if true...

I am very impressed with Apple on this one.
The only things that bugs me (probably because I bought a Mac Pro) is that the iMacs come standard with 1GB and a comparable card.
I didn't even notice the 1GB standard RAM until you mentioned it... I hope this ushers in a change for the other pro models...
Perhaps Mac Pros don't come standard with 1GB RAM because they are supposed to be super configurable, and Apple assumes more RAM will be added anyway?

My upgrade went through without a hitch. They still make me a little nervous though. If it weren't for the battery life issue I might have skipped it.

Thats a big expense and a very big risk. I dont think so.
Did you read the recent article on the history of the iPhone?
If i read it correctly i think it said in it that while negotiating with the carriers they said they were more then willing to buy up minutes and become a carrier themselves

I don't think that anyone who has A Clue doesn't know this already.
The ilk of people who think it's immune are the same ilk of people that don't understand why their WindowsPC is running so "slowly".
I just resent being called smug.
I also resent blackhatters who are new to the OS X game getting all rightous. Where were they the last 5 years? They're part of the REASON "mac users are so smug about security".
I did not intend to call you smug; I apologize if you took it that way... I was responding to your assessment of how "hackers" view Mac Users/The Mac Community.
I think that there are actually a good deal of people with A Clue (in general) that don't understand much about OS X security. I was speaking with hyperbole--I think a lot of people who do have this clue thing think that it's somewhat hard to write viruses for OS X... Apple certainly advertises it horrendously these days.
As for blaming BlackHatters for our ignorance about security issues, I think that you need to get that clue thing for saying that. And as for smug OS X newcomers, you would do well to remember that OS X is MOSTLY *nix at the base. You don't have to be a hardened OS X developer to futz around in it.

Hehe. You are the one falling for the myth about MP myth. DXOMark has a lengthy article that explains why more megapixels is NOT a bad thing. It does NOT negatively influence low light capabilities, contrary to popular belief.
I never disagreed with that, but that's not what I'm talking about-- I'm talking about sensor capabilities, which is the core issue in the MP myth. Just because something has 3 more MP than something else doesn't make it better at all... the quality of the sensor is essential, no? I'm not saying its a bad thing, but to say that this 5MP camera from this manufacturer is worse than this 8MP camera from a different manufacturer solely based on MP... that's the crux of the MP fallacy.

I really like this one. I love the use of b&w with its high contrast. My eye starts on the front left pillar, then is pulled to the right column along the shaft of light on the ground to the bright side of the right column, then the contrast pulls me to the dark side, which then pulls to the bright side of the back left pillar and eventually leads to the perfectly lit Washington Monument. Where were you standing? Lincoln Memorial? This is of course assuming that I am correct in guessing thats DC and not some other monument somewhere in the world.
Thank you for the kind words. I love hearing what elements in a picture peoples eyes are drawn too and how they visually work around the image. That picture was taken from the Jefferson Memorial and the obelisk pictured is indeed the Washington Monument.
Here's another angle on it, I'm not sure how I feel about this one though. I would've liked to be in the middle of the street so the monument would be more visible in the gap right above the flag, but even so, the framing of the buildings directly on the right and left of the monument may have been too tight. Thoughts?

Then how is it an 'in-your-face-you-smug-apple-using-retards'?
Why would these "blackhats" be listening to Apple, particularly when they appear to have an axe to grind?
yeah, I don't see how they can make their smugness quotes, and then go to apple and microsoft first before demoing. It does seem odd, since they would know that all companies involved would "pressure" them like that.

people are not understanding that ALL products on the banner have already been released...aside from leopard.
aside from leopard.
Everything on that banner has been released/announced. THERE IS NOTHING NEW ONTHIS BANNER!
whew...
Ok, please keep in mind that while none of us that aren't in the know at apple can say for sure, it is rational and most plausible that the reason that all these icons/photos are on the banner is because this is what current developers are working on and concerned with in their everyday application creation. Steve said even at Macworld the we are not fully done with the PPC architecture and that developers will need to create with it in mind for a few years to come (hence, the 64-bit logo which applies to the G5). Now, this is not to say that 64 bit chips aren't to be announced, but really! Why would the mix brand new items that have not been announced on the same banner as all of their other known technologies FIVE days before the keynote. It doesn't happen for two reasons. 1) they always wait till the day before to put that stuff up and 2) they always the items on their own unless it has a direct tie in with another known technology (ie: new iPod w/ itunes logo).
Apple wants you to get exited about each new item and focus on them for each promotional piece. If there are 5 major announcement there will be five banners, and so on. Nothing on this banner is a hint to anything. The really goodies/photo leaks will surface around sunday when they guys putting up the new stuff screw up and go for coffee with the banners of a Mac Pro exposed.
Hmmm...... If you look closely at the banner photo you'll see the "64-bit" logo is awfully close to the photo of the iMac. The current Intel iMacs are not 64-bit since the Core Duo (1) processers are 32-bit. Could this mean that the iMacs are going to get the new Core Duo 2 processers, which just happen to be 64-bit.
That's hilarious!! Dude I get your grasping at straws, but come on? Your putting WAY too much thought in to this....

The competition hasn't learned that a huge portion of actual customers don't buy cell phones based on these kinds of hardware specs. And there's not enough money (bottom-line profit) in catering to those fewer customers who do care.
Your point? The competition can still sell the phone at the same or cheaper rate, with a better quality camera. Everyone benefits. If you don't like/use the camera phone, then don't use it. Not every feature on a phone people "need" or use.

One of the most practical/feasible forms may be to just have 2 screens...an iPod as one screen AND a Tablet screen (i.e. eInk, LCD, etc.). In this way, regular iPod users can CHOOSE to just carry around JUST their iPod for music/video, or take along an ADDITIONAL tablet screen if they desire to watch a movie on the larger screen or read documents (e-books) or email or other apps (albeit with a shorter battery life).
Need to still have a "cool" form factor, such that the iPod nests into the tablet screen seamlessly and not some stupid corded device.
This idea would give the consumer both expandability and more incentive to buy an iPod. What most consumers DON'T want is to buy more and more devices that don't "leverage" each other. MOST consumers don't have an unlimited amount of disposable income to buy a shuffle, a nano, an iPodV, a Mac Tablet, an iPhone, etc.
Your thoughts?
Yeah, I think the big-screen (e-ink?) add-on the way you describe it makes the most sense. I was clueless as to how the second screen could fit on the iPod, but I think your idea's pretty feasible with today's tech and would be pretty usable too. If you want to read for just a few minutes, then you don't need the add-on. But if you sit down to read for a few hours, then you plug the bigger screen and you're ready to go. Chances are you won't try to read War and Peace on your way to the supermarket, so you don't need to lug the second screen around all the time. If Apple came out with something like that, I'd buy one right away, although I must say I'd like a color screen, even if it only displays a few really basic colors.
Of course, if the reader does not require the iPod but merely uses it as a storage device to pull stuff from, I think it would indeed boost iPod sales because the iPod would effectively become an add-on for the reader, so it would become attractive to some people who just don't care about the iPod's music capabilities. If the reader is built with the iPod in mind, it could easily have some kind of built-in iPod "dock", as you suggested. Yeah... It seems so perfect that I wonder why Apple hasn't released it yet!!! :P
