I hardly think you know what percentage of the time these programs are abused.

Are these programs sometimes abused? Certainly and it's a problem but unless you have numbers don't claim that these social programs are largely in vain.

I will claim that food stamps are mostly abused. I don't have numbers, but I have eyes, and have known several people that have received food stamps. I have had people I know, as well as strangers, ask me if I would buy their food stamps. I wish food stamps were limited with what you could buy, something like the way WIC does.

Last time I checked iPods and batteries aren't much of a renewable resource.

But wind energy is, so one ipod versus piles of books, we could finally stop all this senseless logging.

hmm... but shouldn't they wait until 802.11n becomes more than just a draft of a format?

Apple seems to believe that the draft will be close enough to the final standard that any differences can be fixed with firmware and/or driver upgrades, without actually changing the hardware. Or at least that there is a good chance. So if the hardware doesn't add more cost or only adds a tiny amount, then they should go with newer hardware.

This sounds like the 8lb iPod SJ previously mentioned! I am looking forward to this thing...whatever form it takes...:p

Except this iPod would only be 2 lbs...or less.

This is complete bullcrap, people. Over the air updates will come, but over WiFi. Doing this over 3G makes no sense.

Haha, yes... When I typed my reply above, I didn't even consider 3G. Come on guys... LOL :D

This will obviously be intended for WLAN's. Apple doesn't even do *FaceTime* over 3G.

    Like the apple store?

Lol, Joking....The Apple store, while certainly a "neat" place, has never been an all-around pleasant experience for me. The place is constantly packed to the brim with people

    +1

While I like going to the Apple store, I don't think I will ever buy another computer there. I bought my MBP there because I needed to see the anti-glare screen beside the glossy screen.

But for a while, it seemed like I was destined to be extremely wealthy because the ivisibility cloak I designed was working to a T. I was completely invisible to anyone who was able to sell me something.

My next iMac will be bought online and shipped to me. Now if the would find a way to put you in a queue so you knew you would helped before the person that walked in the store 30 seconds ago, then maybe I would go back, but not until.

Ah - but it isn't as many as 50 % of the gun crimes that are done by black men. This is just racist propaganda from a statistics-generator which has been pre-programmed to disfavour people with non-English names. The next statement will probably be that more than half of the honour killings in the United Kingdom are done by people from Pakistan or Arab countries, which will be just as absurd. In some cultures, it's acceptable (or even expected) to use violence to get what one wants, and we have to tolerate each other as we are. Dialogue and Understanding.

I love the "Apple tax is out of control" straw man argument.

Very recently I was given a new MS Windows laptop at work. It is a HP EliteBook 8440p laptop. Keep in mind that I knew nothing about the laptop before it was given to me. I am looking at it and thinking, great I was given another low budget laptop to use at work. From the appearance, it looks like a $500 laptop that was built in the 1990's. After doing some digging, this thing is $1300 the way it is configured (starts at $900; Yes, I know this is the MSRP). Talk about a tax that is out of control.

It has basically a unusable trackpad, too small and because the laptop is so thick uncomfortable after several minutes of use. I ended up hooking up a mouse.

I love all the extra lights on it, one for the hard drive status, two for power status, two for WiFi status, one for the trackpad status, three for the volume. I also love the inovative way that HP decided to lightup the keyboard, a popout light on the screen frame. Maybe the lack of a lighted keyboard would have drained the 4 hours battery too quickly that is included in this $1300 laptop.

When I first opened the lid on the laptop I got a good laugh seeing a "intel CORE i5 vPro" sticker that was placed crooked next to trackpad. What is it with all the lights and stickers on these Windows laptops. Someone can't tell if there laptop is on or if the hard drive is accessible.

Hmm, let me see this or the 13" Macbook Pro or even the 13" MacBook.

+1 Windows PC's are over priced pieces of junk.

The only people here to argue against Apple have to be industry plants. How else can anyone be so blind to the quality of Macs versus Windows machines?

Time Machine is nothing like System Restore. Time Machine allows you to find multiple previous versions of a file. For example, if you accidentally save a revised file without changing the name with "Save As", you can still go back to the previous version of the file if you decide you don't like the revisions or if a file is lost or damaged...

Time Machine reminds me a little bit about how MS-Word allows "Quick Saves" to documents: what it basically does is leave the original file alone, but then appends the incremental changes to the end of the file. It makes saving the file faster, at the expense of making the file slower to load (and larger).

From here, its not too much of a leap. Simply:
    a) Take what MS had had for years and make it crash-proof
    b) Extend it from one Application to be supported System wide.

Now if Apple can only beat MS out of the gate on the release date...

They could do ads like this:

    (Cue I'm a Mac/I'm a PC music.)
    Mac: Hello, I'm a Mac.
    PC: And I'm a PC.
Mac: You know, I'm really excited, I have this new operating system called Leopard...
PC: Oh yes, I 'm going to have a new operating system too, called Vista...sometime soon...I think...well, at least there's an 80% chance I will...
    Mac: That's great! ...

Personally, I don't think that's going to be Apple's strategy: I think Steve's laying the groundwork for a big "Mindshare" grab by raising the bar right after Vista finally ships.

    (Cue I'm a Mac/I'm a PC music.)

    Mac: Hello, I'm a Mac.
    PC: And I'm a PC.

Mac: Hey, congratuations - Vista has finally shipped!

PC: Well, thanks. As you see, I can now do this...
Mac: Yeah, I had that last year (Tiger)

PC: And I can now also do this...
Mac: That's really great (2004; Panther)

PC: And I can now also do this...
Mac: And its about time (2003; Jaguar)

PC: so I now just about have everything Apple said it would give you when it previewed your new OS five months ago.

Mac: yeah, well now that Vista's shipped, we no longer have to worry about being too distracting to Vista's developers.

    PC: you, distracting?
Mac: Uh, yeah. I mean, you really, really, needed a more secure OS.

PC: Gosh, you can say that again. But...distracting?

Mac: Well, we didn't exactly announce everything we shipped. Ever heard of "One More Thing"? (insert mind-blowing new features here).

    PC: That's not in Vista.

Mac: Oh, and this stuff has already shipped too...its included -free- in Leopard. Mac users just need to do a "Software Update" to get it activated.

PC: you know, come to think of it, I haven't opened that Vista upgrade yet, so I can still return it. And my hardware is getting pretty old. Hey Mac, think you might be able to help me pick out a new machine?

Mac: Have you been to 5th Avenue in New York recently...?

Which is probably what they thought when they were designing the first SLRs.
Until someone had the brainwave of sticking in an extra lens element to accommodate the mirror.

Staying away from the traditional rangefinder lens deign did not make the lens thinner, it just allowed the extra room to clear out the mirror swing but the les had to get bigger and protrude more. It is like saying "no need to make the phone thicker, just make the lens stck out!" which obviously isn't really an attractive solution - it was done one a few years ago and didn't fare all that well.

I don't see how this comes as a surprise.

Blacks lack a positive male figure; all of this rap and hip hop culture doesn't help them, gangs terrorizing otherwise calm neighborhoods with ignorance and loudness, old banged up Buicks and Chevys with stupid big rims, rattling trunks, etc

They need a positive male figure to look up to or else these numbers will just end up higher.

First impressions after seeing the demo: very exited! The lack of a 'writing video' window seems worth the wait alone.

Still have some questions and doubts though. The interface will no doubt feel like second nature after some time, but what will an omf look like when sent to my audio guy? How about final cut server support, and color, soundtrack pro, etc. Will my old libary of much loved plugins still work?

Very curious about what we're going to see in the coming months.

When I just upgraded through iTunes on Mac, after downloading for a second it flashed "Verifying iPhone with Apple".

Has that been there before? Did I miss it in the past?It always does that, it actually signs the OS from Apple's servers. So now 4.3 cannot be installed anymore.

Waited at Best Buy an hour before they opened to get one, even after reading a few messages in this thread about it only being reservations (call it dumb optimism). Unfortunately, same situation with reservations. Went to the Apple Store and they had ~16 iPads in the configuration I wanted (16GB WiFi, 6 black and 10 white). Should have just tried the Apple Store first.

Building a new PC soon Well i hope for my money Microsoft give me a nice big shiney box for Vista with lots of pointless manuels that give it that expensive heavy feel.

After years of "naughty" versions of Windows feels weird to be looking forward to paying for the latest version.

i think i would rather read a paperback

wouldnt the screen strain the eyes?

I used to think that, but then I started using my old (now deceased) Kyocera 7135 smartphone to read books. Smaller screen than the iPod, not as high resolution. At one point I read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in a single weekend on it, with absolutely no feelings of eye strain. It's not an issue any more.

I found when reading on a smart phone I actually preferred it over a paperback -- easier to hold open (so I could sip my coffee), no worries about losing the page, backlight meant that I could read on the bus in the morning on the way to work, or other places where lighting wasn't always convenient.

Additionally I found I read more, because I always had several books with me, and they were always handy -- standing in a supermarket lineup, I could pull it out and read 2 or 3 pages while waiting.

These days I've even experimented with using j2me to read books on my T610. Not as comfy as the Kyocera, but again no issues with eye strain.

If the T610 is readable, the iPod will be no problem...
