Not being an American, I won't wade into Constitutional issues but I wish our PM would have stayed out of this as well. It's a very dangerous precedent to meddle in another nation's civil war. Perhaps if the West had stopped playing nurse maid to these dictators in the past the problem wouldn't exist.

The wait for this revision back to a superior casing and finish, coupled with vibrant color choices, was clearly worthwhile. Love 'em all!
Definitely! I'm glad I waited.

Hi.
I ordered an iMac Core Duo 20" more than two weeks ago in Spain and have received two emails from the Apple Store delaying its shippment due to "unexpected number of orders and availability of that product" which is kind of suspicious. Finally, it was shipped on Aug. 31 but the delivery date was and still is Sep. 12! ... I think I just might get one of the upgraded iMacs because Apple never took almost to weeks to deliver any product to me.
When I get the computer I will post about whatever it is inside!

Cool. Maybe alongside this magical 3D display technology, they can magically figure out how to put ANOTHER SPEAKER IN IT SO WE CAN HEAR IN GLORIOUS 1950s STEREO!!!

I don't see how adjusting the UI at the last minute could be any sort of OK. Do you really want developers using the Tiger finder for the next 7 months, and then all of the sudden Apple goes BAM (Emeril Style) and puts in a brand new finder.
a) apple did the exact same thing with OS X. aqua was kept under wraps for a long, long time from the general public and public developers. up until maybe a year before hand we all though OS X was going to look like OS 9.
b) if you work with big software makers you'll know that top tier developers get access to things that aren't made publicly available months and years in advance. the last alpha/beta cycle i participated in started one month after the latest release (and i was on the second invite list).
I want those developers to be able to integrate the finder with their apps. If all Apple is doing is adjusting some colors or icons or something, then we shouldn't be excited about the new finder in the first place. But if Apple is going to do some major revamping, shame on them for keeping it a secret.
People need time to work with it and find all the kinks, especially if it is dramatically different from Tiger
a) see above regarding developers. just because we didn't see it in the keynote doesn't mean that the developers haven't
b) app developers don't really integrate with the finder.
c) tiger represented a big shift in OS X development. apple publicly stated that their APIs, previously a moving target, were basically being locked down. what that means is developers don't have to worry (as much) about under the hood changes. if the file browser dialog changes dramatically between now and next spring developers should theoretically have to do nothing, their function/method calls are just calls.

I haven't seen the video. But if the description of the vulnerability says "seize control" or "aribtrary code execution", it's the real thing. They can do whatever they want, although sometimes restricted by the privileges of the user that the compromised process is running as.
Here's the link to the main blog page, with video: link (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/)

Update:Nope, still hasn't shipped. Darn me for custom ordering it... ;-)
Yeah, I first put an 80GB HD instead of the standard 60, and it wasn't due to ship until the end of the month. I completely forgot that customizing it would pust it way back. I immediately called Apple to cancel it. They said I was in luck as there usually weren't any people in to cancel orders at that time, but one guy happened to be in. Within a few minutes it was cancelled and I re-ordered it without customizing the Macbook nor iPod (engraving).
That phone call probably made sure my goods will arrive 2 weeks earlier than originally. Phew.
I too was hoping to get an upgraded iPod, but hey, no worries. My first iPod and I'm lovin it. Be nice if my MacBook comes with a Core 2 though >.> (wishful thinking)
If they upgrade the MBs substantially I will chew my bloody leg off. Don't get me wrong: while immensily enjoying my Core Duo Macbook. But still...

What makes it worse is that the US doesn't benefit from it's imperialistic tendencies aside from a few corrupt politicians and the select defense and oil business. The net effect to the tax payer is negative. The UK at least was smart enough to let it's empire go when it realized that it was no longer profitable.
Cheers,
Ahmed
The UK now just helps us out because they are basically our #2. After WWII the United States was the only world power that didn't have devastated infrastructure and economy and had a never before seen military strength. No one was capable of coming back from that, and if you don't play nice with the big dog, its going to bite you. They didn't give up the imperialism, they just decided second in command was good enough. Take a look at the Bush/Blair bromance.

Ahmed

If the movie store is announced on the 12th, I'm guessing the Aussie store will arrive some time in 2009 :) though maybe movies don't have as messed up distribution rights as music, but don't hold your breath.
And I was going to moan about the UK store :D I feel guilty now.
I'm looking at buying a new 42" or greater HD TV, I daren't actually go through with it though because I have a feeling Apple is working on something similar as part of a frontrow media centre. Well... thats what i'd like to think! :D

Now I don't know what to do. I need an iPod that can hold all of my media (just my music alone is over 100 GB) so I can bring it with me wherever I go. (I hate having to choose a portion of my music instead of just grabbing it all.) But the MacRumors Buyer's Guide says not to buy - update soon. So is Apple going to kill it or release a new version? If I wait, I might miss out on getting one. But if I get one now, I might miss out on a better model. Ugh.
Best to assume the iPod classic as we know it won't be updated, given the fact that's it's been nearly 2 years since it's last revision.
So brace yourself for the inevitable and either consider buying what they currently have available to meet your portable digital storage needs, or be ready to shell out some cash for the high end iPod touch.

Merom in the iMacIntel does leave a space in the lineup for the Conroe Mini-Tower.
When they come out and we both buy one, can we have a little MacRumours party topic? We can dance all night long! ;)
I would be so happy!

I used to think the same way. 2 kids off to college, money is tight but I gave them each their choice of laptops:
1.) kid#1 chose a Dell because she <gasp> liked Vista
2.) kid#2 chose the plain old white macbook
3 years later, guess which one is currently crap? Seriously, Kid#1 comes home one day, opens up her Dell and she's got 3 keys missing one of which is the Enter key - has no clue where they went. :D Also, the battery is lasting a full 20 minutes and the DVD drive is kaput. The damn thing creaks and moans more than my arthritic joints.
Now, the lowly white macbook looks like it's been used as a door mat (which I polished up for kid #2 in about 5 minutes) but it works flawlessly.
Really... don't rationalize the cost. Kids are tough on these things and you aren't always there to "learn 'em" how to handle them. A well built mac + Applecare is a pretty secure future for their learning experience.
When my child hits college, she can have whatever she wants.
She is 8 years old and in 2nd grade right now. Contrary to what her school thinks, she doesn't "need" a $1k+ laptop to work on what boils down to Word docs and web research.

I surely hope so, comics and manga would be a huge hit especially in Japan.I agree that comics etc would be big.
However - I'm also interested in the electronic Ink technologies that are easy on the eyes and require almost no battery. I doubt Apple would make such a simple device, but who knows.
It would be very interesting to read Lord of the Rings and have the soundtrack playing - synchronised to where you're up to in the book. Or the book with excerpts from the movie.

well defending a country doesn't equal "having the capability to blow up another country thousands miles away". For many european countries, apart of France and Britain, it never was needed because they lacked colonies
also todays political realites need to be kept in mind: after german reunification and the fall of the warsaw pact, an aweful lot of armies were simply way to overblown. With the EU expansions even more: what is the point of keeping thousands of tanks when there is no country next to you which has even close the capability to be a danger to you and neither has any motivation for a military attack.
It's not their fault that the US is still stuck in cold war spending.

ThinkSecret is generally dead on when it comes to things like this. So, it'd be great if they released an updated 23" iMac. I just got a 5G iPod 30GB in July and am happy with it so I don't need a new 'pod. And yes, I just got a new MacBook 2 weeks ago, but for future purchases, a 23" iMac would be neat.

To all those cutting military by huge percentages, what are your plans to deal with the millions of unemployed that would produce?
Ummmmmmm
we don't spend 700 billion on troops. Cut the useless technology programs, give all the remaining money to troops and their needed supplies and equipment.

It doesn't really matter what you think about Wal*Mart and their practices, however this story seems very unlikely. If proof of these allegations comes to light Apple would be able to double their cash on hand through one of the biggest lawsuit the world has ever seen. These allegations, if true, violate many different federal and state statutes and Apple would probably be bigger than Microsoft after the dust settled. Real damages would be in the Billions and punitive damages could be ten times as much. Wal*Mart can do this kind of thing to small companies and many third world countries, but Apple has the money to actually take this to court and juries are far more likely to believe the popular and stylish iPod maker than Wal*Mart with their reputation (deserved or not) for exploitation.

Will this recall ever expire?
The reason im asking is that my 3k550 A1079 12" PB battery only has been through 18 battery loadcycles and still has 100% capacity according to cocounut battery...
Im wondering If I should get it replaced right now or wait untill my current battery starts running out of juice? What would you guys do?
edit: My pb warps every once in a while, could a new battery fix the problem?
and risk having the battery catch on fire or actually do something worse? that would be stupid
