I suspected it would be extremely soon, that's why I didn't bother doubling up and getting the previous 899 model out on display as well as the 749.
Anyway, the 1GB of RAM was expected as far as I was concerned, but I didn't expect the BlackBook to jump straight up to 120GB in one shot.
So, base to mid we have faster cpu with better L2 cache, bigger hard drive and DVD burning now. Easier to persuade people to go higher than previously.

Forgive me if this isn't new, but I just noticed that you can order the BT keyboard and mighty mouse as a package for $60 ($54 edu discount). Given that the BT MM alone is $69, this is a great deal.

I feel it is highly likely we will see a new tiny laptop from Apple at some point in 2007.
Intel will be releasing Merom next spring, AND an ultra-low voltage version for tiny laptops.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2#Merom_2
There used to be more detail there but it seems to have gone.
Still baffled as to why Apple stopped the 12'' PB, but maybe they felt they wouldn't sell enough in 9 months to recover the costs of designing an intel core version, before needing a major redesign for the 2007 tiny laptop.
Wait wait.... we're getting all hot and bothered about Core 2 Duo... and you're telling me a new chip will be out in a few months...
I can't keep up!

This is just pretty.
Cool shot! I loved that place when I visited 5 years ago, and your photo instantly took me back to the sunrises there...
thank you both. Curiously enough, that particular photo is not my most favorite. It seems a bit too busy to me and is definitely burned out in some of that background. But a number of people have responded positively to it - which merely goes to show that I don't have a clue.
My own favorite is the first i posted a couple days back ... which I continue to tweak and improve in post

A little fill flash to get a catchlight in the eye and this would be perfect.

Its a heavy crop as he was very far. Too far for fill flash to have any effect unfortunatally.

Because no one wants to take pictures with the iPad. I want to list all the situations where the iPhone would be much more accessible and easier to take pictures with...but that would be a huge waste of my time. It's pretty obvious.
This made me chuckle. Nice dude.
I want an iPad that takes, at least reasonable quality photo's.
I would not expect DSLR quality, but if I am out and I have my iPad with me, and I wish to take a photo or a video, then at least I would like it to be of a quality that does the moment justice.
The silly thing about this argument is you are defending the indefensible.
There is no reason why a worse item is desirable over a better item all things being equal.
The only reasons are cost, size etc.
1mp camera's should have stopped being made years ago. There is no reason to deliberately make anything worse that you can, unless it's marketing and a planned strategy.

There's zero incentive for Apple to do that. They're in the business of making $$. If they made a phone, and supported it for 5 - 7 years, no one would buy new ones, therefore no revenue. It's all about making cash...
Plus, a phone going on 3 plus years is pretty good. You got you money's worth. Sell it on E Bay-or Craigslist, and make some cash. Or like you said, an iPod.
Yeah, but given they still sell the 3GS as a new phone, they should make a 3G version that is lighter on the processor so it's snappier or just provide the 3.X version.

What's this about datapads? I managed to get through the game on Heroic & half on Legendary without finding even one. Don't make me go through all that again!
Yep, the game has some datapads in all of the various levels. Much like the Terminals in Halo 3, and the Audio Logs in ODST, these are sort of hidden. They all tell a different bit of side story, or back story. Not really required, per se, but they do give some good info if you do hunt them down.
I still don't understand why Halsey was kept in a glass cell.
She sealed herself off because of the Covenant attack on Sword Base, to try and keep herself and her research safe. At least, that is what I took of it.
I'd love to play through the series again, starting with Reach and then Halo, etc., but I've never tried playing Halo on a 360. Does it play/look ok?
Yep, both Halo 1 & 2 work just fine on the 360. They have turned off the old Xbox Live servers, so obviously you won't be able to play Halo 2 online, but the campaigns from both games will work fine.
Halo Wars >> Reach >> Halo 1 >> Halo 2 >> ODST >> Halo 3
I'm growing more and more disenchanted with Multi-player though...I'd rather pop in Halo 3...the game variants and maps are much more enticing...
I sort of agree. I've been having a real hit-or-miss experience with the Multiplayer lately. Either the games go great, and are fun, or there is tons of quitting, and the games fall apart. I really like BTB and Invasion, and both of them could really stand to have some of the maps looked at with regards to the spawns and balance issues. The game could be quite fun, but it still needs some work to refine it a bit.
On a slightly related note, I have hit Lt. Colonel, and my Spartan has had some new modifications done to him... :D

"...clearly showing his preference for an open system unfettered by reviewers deciding what may and may not be included on the iPhone platform."
I think if you asked most of the population, the vast majority would find it 100% reasonable and appropriate that any retail company, in any business sector, decides what they will or won't sell in their store - be it WalMart, The Gap, Starbucks, or your local corner grocery store. Apples retail store is just that... a retail store --- and the norms of business retail don't go away, to be replaced by a magical la-la land where people get to do whatever they want.

On a full sized computer? That's horrible. Adobe has to get their act together and make flash more efficient before they can be allowed on the iphone.
Well, yes, on a full-size C2D iMac.
But, did you notice the part where on a similar, C2D AOPEN Mini, running Windows 7, IE8 runs the same Flash movie at 0%-1%, Chrome and Firefox at 4%, but Safari goes to almost 30%.
I'd say it's Apple that has the problem, and not Adobe.
Flash works just fine, and it's useful and necessary to the vast majority of users. Adobe seems to be doing a very good job with 10, and from what I've seen, it runs just fine on mobiles presumably less powerful than the iPhone.
The way I see it, if there is a pi$$ing match between Apple and Adobe, and Adobe takes its ball (Creative Suite) and walks away from Apple, the Mac OS will die, for all practical purposes.
Anyway, the iPhone must have Flash, if it is to remain competitive, and Apple really needs to dedicate some resources, and make sure Flash (and Java) run better on OS X.

It would be really disappointing if they waited with this upgrade for mwsf 2007.
I don't think we'll see a new MB at MWSF 2007. Possibly a bit later than that in time for the Leopard release.
But then again we never know.

Gotta check this mode out, sounds like fun. I asked this before but its been awhile, has anyone beat it on legendary yet? I am going to go through it anyway but i was just wondering.
I actually finished my Solo Legendary run last night. It was, quite possibly, the worst experience I've ever had in gaming. I could only take a level or two a day, and even then, they would each take me roughly 2 hours to complete. The final level last night actually took me 3.5 hours. I was taking it slow and deliberate, but still I died 23 times. It was about as far from fun as I could imagine. I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but I mean it even more now. I vehemently disagree with the way Bungie ups the "Difficulty" in this game. The way it seems to work to me goes like this...
You start with Normal difficulty, where you and the enemies do a base level of damage, and have a base level of damage resistance. Upping this to Heroic means the enemies have more damage resistance, but also do more damage to you. When you up this to Legendary, it gets even worse. An 3 Sniper rounds won't drop the shields of some Elites, but at the same time, roughly 3-4 shots from a measly Plasma Pistol will drop your shields, leaving you completely vulnerable to any more attacks. This means that now, even a little pack of lowly Grunts can, and probably will, mess you up. Let alone when the game throws you, by yourself, into an area where there are 4-5 Skirmishers, 5-6 Grunts, and a group of Elite Rangers. Oh and just to make it "Harder" for you, here, take this Pistol with 24 rounds, and a worthless Assault Rifle that is only good in close quarters, but if you get that close, you will get just destroyed.
To me, it seems like many games that do this, are trying to add artificial "Difficulty" to a game to make up for a lack of actual AI challenge. In a perfect world, where the AI in games is remotely competent, game makers could just make the enemies react and interact in more challenging ways. But, since even in the AI in games still ranks as mentally incapacitated, so they have to resort to artificially challenging you by bending the rules of the game to make it "harder" to beat. This sucks, but is apparently the best we can get.

Anybody else notice that the supposed "limited edition" mono box set, which sold out on the first day it was available for pre-order, seems to have hung around for a bit?
It's available on Amazon for I believe half what I paid for it over a year ago.
If I had realized that "Limited edition" meant "only limited by how many copies our CD presses can turn out" or "only limited by how many you gullible public will buy" then perhaps I could have saved myself some money.
I guess a sucker is born every minute.

Does anyone in Australia (or anywhere else similar) know exactly when your education discount no longer applies for uni? Your last day of classes? Your last exam? Graduation day 2-3 months later? Because I should be finishing in February and I wanted to know how long to hold out. Will Leopard be out by Jan/Feb? Or at least a free upgrade for laptops purchased late Jan/early Feb?
Well... I haven't gone to school in over a year and a half, but I still have my student ID so I keep it in my wallet and use it whenever I buy stuff at the Apple Store. No expiration date printed on the ID
